During cold weather spells, many people are tempted to feed resident deer to help them through frigid nights. Unfortunately, feeding these animals often does more harm than good. Artificial sources of food can cause digestive problems for deer, and encourage them to concentrate together in small areas instead of spreading out to look for food, putting the animals at risk for disease and run-ins with dogs and cars.
Viewer Tip: During fall, deer and other animals prepare for the upcoming winter by increasing fat deposits, developing heavier coats, and changing their daily activities. These preparations help to ensure that deer make it through the winter season. Please don’t feed the deer – these animals are well-adapted to finding natural, healthy sources of food on their own.
