As nighttime temperatures go down, the indoor thermostat often goes up, and winter heating can account for up to half of the average family’s energy bill. If you’re turning up the heat, consider taking energy efficient steps in other ways at home to shave a few dollars off your monthly bill.
Viewer Tip: Believe it or not, heating water accounts for up to 15 percent of your home energy costs! Save energy and money by setting your hot water heater no higher than 120 degrees, which will provide adequate hot water for most purposes. You can also avoid losing heat from your water heater by wrapping it with an insulation blanket, which you can find at your local home improvement store. Want to save even more? Try using cold water for your laundry, which can save up to $63 dollars per year in energy costs – many companies now make detergents designed specifically for cold water washing.
