Sediment Sense (Atlanta, GA)
Sediment – better known as dirt – has been documented as the leading water pollution source in rivers and streams throughout Georgia. When rain water runs over construction sites and bare spots in yards, it carries soil into the storm drain, and eventually to local rivers and streams. Too much sediment in our waterways can affect drinking water quality, smother wildlife habitat, and close recreation areas.
Viewer Tip: Avoid losing soil from your yard when it rains – cover planting beds and other exposed areas with mulch or grass seed. Planning a construction project? Be sure to cover exposed soil and piles of gravel, sand, or other materials with a tarp to avoid erosion.
