Septic Smarts (Asheville, NC)

Over 75 percent of homes in western North Carolina depend on septic systems, even though as much as 90 percent of the land in some counties is unsuitable for individual sewage treatment systems.  Primarily due to unsuitable soils in the drainfields, septic systems can be a health hazard to you and your neighbors, contaminating local drinking water, polluting nearby waterways, and causing unpleasant odors in your home.

Viewer Tip: If you are considering buying a house or lot, obtain as much information as you can about the soil conditions and the existing septic system.  Make sure to ask about the unit’s capacity, age, and upkeep.  If you have already have a septic system, make sure that your home gutters and downspouts do not discharge near the drainage field to avoid carrying pollutants into groundwater supplies.

Seasons: Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter
