Rental Energy Savings (Steubenville, OH-Wheeling, WV)

The U.S. Census 2006 American Community Survey showed that30 percent of total housing units inOhio and 25 percent in West Virginiawere renter-occupied. Homeowners have the freedom to make changes at home that help increase energy efficiency during the heating season, but it can be more difficult for renters to find ways to save energy without making permanent changes to their space. While renters may not be able to choose the type of heating they have, replace appliances or install new fixtures, there are simple ways to save a few dollars on energy bills this season.

Viewer Tip: When it is sunny outside, take advantage of free heat! Open blinds and curtains to allow warming sunlight into your home, especially if you have windows that face to the south, and turn the thermostat down a few degrees to keep from getting too warm. Closeblinds and curtains at night to keep the heat inside. If you live in a building with a central heating system, close radiator valves in rooms that feel too warm, or talk to your building manager about adjusting the temperature. If your apartment feels too warm, avoid opening a window, which will cause the furnace to create more heat, wasting energy.
