Brittle Bones

Cold winter weather often means icy conditions, posing a risk of injury to all who walk on walkways, stairs, and sidewalks.  Ice is especially dangerous for seniors with brittle bones.  One study found that senior citizens aged 65 to 79 had 1.3 times greater chance of sustaining a bone fracture between October and March than during the rest of the year.

Viewer Tip: The best way to guard against injury from winter falls is to keep walkways, driveways, and outdoor steps free of ice.  Either apply preventative deicing materials, or scrape ice off walkways after severe weather.  Remind seniors and others with mobility issues to be extra cautious during icy conditions.
