A special danger during hot weather is a hot car. With cracked windows, temperatures inside a car can rise by 20 degrees Fahrenheit in the first 10 minutes. After 60 minutes, that temperature can be as much as 43 degrees warmer – in the shade. Even on a 70 degree day, car interiors can be deadly. Heat stroke occurs when the body’s core temperature reaches 104 degrees and death occurs when the core temperature reaches 107 degrees. Children’s body temperature can increase 3-5 times faster than adults’ and cannot tolerate the heat as easily as an adult.
Viewer Tip: Protect children from the dangers of hot cars with these simple tips:
- Place an item you will need – purse, diaper bag, gym bag – in the back seat where the child is sitting. Never leave a child unattended in a vehicle even with the window slightly open.
- Make sure young children are accompanied by an adult when getting in and out of a vehicle.
- Teach children not to play in and around cars, and keep keys/remote entry devices out of the reach of children. When a car is parked, keep it locked with windows up at all times, especially at home.
Remember that pets are also vulnerable to extreme heat. Cats and dogs don’t perspire like humans and can develop heat-related health problems in just minutes. Play it safe by leaving your pet at home when you’re on the road.
