As much as 50 percent of water applied to landscaping is lost due to wind, evaporation, improper system design, installation, or maintenance. Much of this waste can be avoided with a more thoughtful approach to gardening and watering.
Viewer Tip: Give these tips a try to grow a healthy garden and save water at the same time.
- Be an early bird. For starters, water lawns and gardens only when needed and during the coolest part of the day; early morning is best.
- Grow green. To maintain a green, healthy lawn, you don’t need to water every day. To find out if your grass is thirsty, stick a screwdriver in the ground. If it goes in easily, don’t water!
- Get to know the natives. If you’re a gardener, find out which plants are native to your region. Climate-appropriate species require less water, so ask an expert at your local nursery which plants are homegrown and drought-tolerant.
