Pet Management

Summertime brings people and their pets out for walks, and pet owners enjoy walking and playing with their pets at the beach.  Waste from our pets, whether in the backyard or at the beach, is a source of bacteria that can contaminate our beaches and Great Lakes waters during the next rain.

Viewer Tip: You can help reduce the impact of your pet’s waste by following these common sense tips:

  • Properly dispose of your pet’s waste while at the beach – throw waste away in a trash can.
  • Pick up after pets at home and on walks in the neighborhood.  When left on lawns, sidewalks, or alleys, pet waste can wash into storm drains and local waterways during the next rain.

Interested in becoming more active at your local Great Lakes Beach?  Consider adopting a beach through the Alliance for Great Lakes Adopt-A-Beachâ„¢ program.  Help collect meteorological and beach health data and pick up litter that hinders your fun at the beach.  Contact the Alliance for Great Lakes at www.greatlakes.org.
