Did you know that more water is used in July in most states than any other month? The U.S. EPA estimates that up to 50 percent of water used for outdoor irrigation is wasted due to evaporation, wind or overwatering. Some homes can lose up to 70 gallons per day!
Viewer Tip: July is Smart Irrigation Month – the perfect time to adjust your watering habits.
- Inspect your sprinklers. Fix any leaks, broken/clogged heads and other problems. Make sure sprinklers are watering your lawn, not the sidewalk.
- Install a rain sensor. Rain sensor devices shut-off your sprinklers automatically during rainy weather. They are inexpensive and can be retrofitted to almost any system.
- Go with “smart” technology. If you’re in the market for new sprinklers, consider a system with soil moisture sensors that can automatically adjust your watering schedule based on weather and soil conditions. Learn more: www.irrigation.org/smartwater/.
