Weatherize Your Home

Before Old Man Winter arrives on your doorstep, use these tips to prevent freezing pipes and save on your energy and water bills.

Viewer Tip:

  • Drain outdoor spigots, detach hoses, and turn off the water to outdoor faucets when temperatures begin to dip below freezing to prevent pipes from leaking or bursting. When you drain the water, catch it in a bucket to water plants—remember, every drop counts!
  • Bundle up outdoor spigots with a cold weather cover or insulator to provide extra protection.
  • Insulate hot water pipes or the hot water heater for more immediate hot water at the faucet and for energy savings inside the home.
