Dumpster Drainage

When it rains and water flows out of yards or over pavements, it travels into storm drains, which carry water directly to our rivers, lakes and ocean untreated. Pollutants  that are picked up by rain water along the way can degrade water quality suffers and even cause beach closures.  Two common sources of  water pollution are dumpsters and loading docks.

Viewer Tip: To help protect water quality, try these storm water best management practices (BMPs) for dumpsters and loading docks:

  • Identify and locate where storm drains are on and near your premises so you know where the pollutants would migrate to from your areas.
  • Make sure storm drains near loading docks and dumpsters are free of debris.
  • Keep dumpster lids closed to keep rain water out.  Frequently check dumpsters for leaks and avoid placing liquid waste or leaky bags in the dumpster.
  • Sweep around loading docks and dumpsters to keep litter from accumulating.
