Fishing Line

Did you know that monofilament fishing line does not biodegrade? That means that a piece of fishing line can last about 600 years in an aquatic environment! Fish and other wildlife can become entangled in fishing line and some animals eat the line and cannot digest it. Entanglement and accidental ingestion of fishing line can seriously injure or kill fish and wildlife.

Viewer Tip: This is the time of year when many people head to streams, lakes and the ocean to fish. Trout Unlimited suggests retrieving and properly disposing of monofilament fishing line whenever possible. To properly dispose of fishing line, deposit it in recycling containers at your local boat ramp or fishing pier, or ask your local tackle shop if they recycle fishing line. If you cannot recycle your fishing line, it is best to cut the line into 12-inch pieces before putting it in the trash.
