Reduce Your Turf
When designing your outdoor space, think of it as a room. Many homes have area rugs instead of wall to wall carpeting. Your grass area can also be an area rug. Mowing a shape into your field can make the area much more interesting than a huge area of mowed grass – preserving “wild” vegetation in your yard also saves water and provide wildlife habitat. Incorporating a small area of grass into a larger area of wildflowers and native vegetation can also make a beautiful statement.
Viewer Tip: New England Wild Flower Society recommends smaller areas of grass with fewer chemicals (or none). Try creating an area rug of grass within your garden. Feed it with compost tea, an all natural and healthy alternative to harsh chemicals.
