Snow Showers
If you have cabin fever this winter and can’t be enjoying time outside, know that the snow is beneficial to the bodies of water and other natural areas that you enjoy during the summer. Snow replenishes water in rivers and streams and provides insulation for fish and wildlife that slow down during the winter. At home, snow can actually benefit plants in your yard during freezing winter weather. Flower bulbs and garden root crops will benefit from an insulating layer of snow. Protecting plants and vegetation throughout the winter months will result in healthy spring landscapes benefiting the wildlife that rely on it.
Viewer Tip: Trout Unlimited suggests trying these tips for distributing snow around your yard:
- Don’t pile up a lot of snow in areas around your house where there is poor drainage. Too much snow can result in waterlogged soil in the spring and can stress or even kill some plants.
- Instead of pushing snow into the street, pile some of the snow shoveled off driveways and walkways around plants under eaves that may have escaped coverage by snowfall. It will help insulate these areas.
