Unplug from Wasting Energy
Summers in the greater Southwest can be scorchingly hot, compelling us to run our air conditioners for relief from the heat. Unbeknownst to us, we may be causing our air conditioners to work harder and longer, resulting in excess energy use and more money spent on energy bills. Appliances that are continually plugged in generate heat without us even realizing it – electric chargers, televisions and audio/visual equipment use electricity and produce heat even when they are not in use.
Viewer Tip: Unplug appliances during the day when they are not in use to reduce the demand on your air conditioner and/or ceiling fans. And, whenever possible, run heat-producing appliances that use a lot of energy – like dishwashers, clothes washers and dryers – in the evening when it is cooler to avoid making air conditioner to work harder.
