Mulch is any covering placed around plants. Mulch conserves water because and prevents erosion by slowing runoff and permitting your landscape to better absorb and retain water from winter rains. Mulch also suppresses weed growth, shelters the soil from temperature extremes and improves appearance of your landscape.

Viewer Tip: Apply a two- to three-inch layer of mulch around plants in the fall or winter to keep soil temperatures even and reduce water evaporation. Organic mulch can also be applied to unplanted raised beds as a top dressing. A variety of organic and inorganic mulches are available on the market and materials for mulch may be found right in your yard. Mulch options include shredded tree prunings, bark chips, raked leaves, grass clippings, and rocks or pebbles.

Energy use in the United States typically increases during the holiday season. At this time of year, festive holiday lights that decorate homes and neighborhoods across the country can drive up energy demand and home energy bills.

Viewer Tip: Hold on to the holiday spirit while saving energy and money this season. Look for holiday lights that have earned the Energy Star, which means they meet strict energy efficiency guidelines from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Energy. Many Energy Star labeled strands use light emitting diodes (LEDs), which are more efficient than their traditional incandescent counterparts:

Energy-Saving: Energy Star light strands use about 70 percent less energy than conventional incandescent lights. The amount of energy used by just one incandescent bulb could power 140 LEDs – that’s enough lights for two 24-foot strings!

Long-lived: LED light strands last up to 10 times longer than traditional strands.

Safer: LED lights stay cool to the touch, which reduces the risk of fire.

Add a timer to your holiday lighting display to save even more energy. Set lights to turn on at night and off during the day.

November 13-19 is the National Geographic Society’s Geography Awareness Week. This year’s theme is “The Adventure in Your Community.” Geography is all around us and varies from region to region in the United States. Did you know that geography and weather are very closely linked? Explore some of the connections below. (Click on images or caption links to download images.)

Pacific Northwest: There are several volcanoes in the Pacific Northwest, including Mount St. Helens, Mount Rainier and Mount Hood. Volcanic eruptions can impact local weather. Eruptions emit particles and gases into the atmosphere, creating a haze. This haze can remain in the air for years, reflecting the sun’s rays and reducing temperatures at the Earth’s surface.

Western US: The Sierra Nevada Mountains that run north-south through California basically separate the Western United States into a wetter (west) side and a drier (east) side. Storms come off the Pacific Ocean from the west and get lifted up by the Sierra Nevada Mountains – a process called orographic lifting. As these storms rise, they cool and condense, raining a lot of water back onto the ground.

But, as the storms continue to make their way over the top of the mountains to the east, they don’t dump as much rain because they have already lost a lot of moisture. This causes a rain shadow to form on the east side of the mountain range where there is a low amount of rainfall. The rain shadow from the Sierra Nevada and Cascade Mountains impacts the weather in the Great Basin, which covers most of Nevada and parts of Utah.

As cold air passes over the Lakes, warmer lake water below evaporates and heats the bottom layer of cold air. Warm, moist air rises and cools, causing condensation and cloud formation. If humidity is high enough and temperatures are cold enough, snow falls. Winds push these clouds over land, where increased friction slows the winds, leading to more snowfall accumulation. As winds move farther inland and encounter hills, rising air cools even more, creating even more snow!

The Rocky Mountains to the west are the driving force for blizzards in the Great Plains. A cold polar air mass that moves off the Rockies pushes southward accompanied by high winds, intense cold and considerable amounts of snow that can last for several days.

Fewer daylight hours and cooler temperatures mean that many people spend more time inside during the fall and winter months. While up to half of the energy used in a typical home goes towards heating and cooling, other home features like water heaters, appliances and lighting contribute to energy bills. Swapping traditional light bulbs for compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs) is one of the easiest ways to start saving energy at home and at work.

Viewer Tip: Look for light bulbs that have earned the Energy Star, which means they meet strict energy efficiency guidelines from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Energy. Consider these facts and figures:

An average Energy Star qualified light bulb uses 75 percent less energy than a standard bulb and lasts about six times longer.

Energy Star CFLs emit less heat than traditional light bulbs.

Swapping one traditional bulb for an Energy Star bulb can save 40 dollars or more over the lifetime of the bulb. Swap five and save over 200 dollars!

Get tips for purchasing CFL light bulbs – including choosing light intensity, color and size – at www.energystar.gov/ia/products/fap/purchasing_checklist_revised.pdf.

About 80 percent of the United States’ pumpkin supply is available in October, but pumpkin makes an appearance year-round in pies, breads and other foods. Weather can have a big impact on the yearly pumpkin harvest.

Wet and soggy: Too much rain can cause crops to rot. Mildews, which thrive in wet conditions, can damage leaves and stems or kill pumpkin vines and fruits. During spring of this year, heavy rain delayed pumpkin planting the northeast, which in turn delays harvest time. Then, Hurricane Irene flooded pumpkin fields throughout the northeastern United States in September. (Photo at right: Powdery mildew makes leaves on pumpkin vines brittle and dry)

Hot and dry: Dry, hot weather can cause pumpkins to produce too many male blossoms and too few female blossoms, resulting in a smaller harvest. Lack of water during droughts can also result in smaller and lighter-weight pumpkins. Pumpkin harvest in Texas dropped 40 percent or more due to drought conditions in the state this year.

Chilly: An early freeze can kill pumpkins. And, chilly weather in the spring can prevent pumpkin blossoms from germinating. Why? Because bees – which carry pollen from plant to plant – don’t fly until the temperature is at least 55 degrees. Without bees and pollination, there are no pumpkins.

Viewer Tip: Despite a rough year for pumpkin patches, many farmers are meeting demand by bringing in pumpkins from other areas. If you are carving or cooking this year, put the whole pumpkin to use! If you don’t eat the seeds yourself, spread them outside as a snack for birds and squirrels. And, instead of weighing down your trash bags and sending past-their-prime pumpkins to the landfill, put them to use in your garden. Pumpkins can be added to compost piles, where they will decompose and add nutrients to your compost.

Did you know that commercial and industrial buildings account for up to half of energy use in the United States? Many of the simple energy-saving steps we use at home can be implemented at work, too.

Viewer Tip: Every October, government organizations, businesses, associations and individuals observe Energy Awareness Month with activities and programs to reduce energy consumption in our daily lives. Why not make your time at work more energy efficient?

Up to 35 percent of the electricity used in an office building is consumed by lighting! If you have a desk lamp, replace a traditional light bulb with a compact fluorescent bulb (CFL). CFLs use about 75 percent less energy and last 10 times longer.

Have a window near your desk? Reduce energy needs for cooling and heating: Close blinds during warm weather to keep out the sun’s heat; on cold days, leave blinds open during daylight hours to let in the sun’s warmth.

Keep air vents clear of papers, files and office supplies. It can take up to 25 percent more energy to pump air into a workspace if vents are blocked.

Energy Star has many more tips for going green at work. Visit www.energystar.gov/index.cfm?c=energy_awareness.awareness_you_can_do.

Did you know that animals can burn in the sun just like humans? Some animals like a hippopotamus, elephant and pig use nature’s sunscreen to help protect from the sun. Elephants use their trunks to cover themselves in dust to protect their skin from the sun. Hippos and pigs cover themselves in mud, which acts as a natural skin protector. The mud helps keep the animals cool while keeping their skin from burning. For humans, protecting our skin is just as important – our skin can become painfully burned in a short period of time, just like animals. We can protect ourselves by wearing sunscreen, hats, sun glasses, and staying in the shade.

Viewer Tip: Animals instinctively take action to prevent sunburn. You can provide shade, cover and food for birds and other wildlife in your yard by planting holly, eastern redcedar or service berry.

Although we tend to use more water outdoors during the summer months, up to 70 percent of the water we need at home is used indoors.

Viewer Tip: Weather keeping you inside? Keep these water-saving tips in mind:

Keep a pitcher of drinking water in the refrigerator instead of letting the faucet run until the water is cool.

Wash summer fruits and vegetables in a bowl of water, and use a vegetable brush to clean them instead of rinsing.

Scrape, don’t rinse, dishes before loading into the dishwasher, and wash only full loads.

If you’re remodeling your bathroom or replacing plumbing fixtures this summer, look for the WaterSense label for products that save water and perform well.

While the speeds of rips currents vary, some have exceeded five miles per hour, which is faster than an Olympic swimmer can swim! When people swimming at a beach are caught in a rip current and pulled offshore into water over their heads, drowning can occur due to a combination of panic, exhaustion, and lack of swimming skills.

Viewer Tip: Rip currents are typically found at low spots and breaks in sand bars, or near jetties and piers. Before you head to the beach, check the latest forecast for beach conditions at www.ripcurrents.noaa.gov/forecasts.shtml. Always swim at a beach with lifeguards on duty and heed their advice. Nearly all rip current drownings occur at unguarded beaches.

Do you enjoy beautiful flowers, juicy fruits and fresh vegetables? Over 80 percent of the world’s flowering plants like cucumbers, blueberries and honeysuckle are dependent on animal pollinators. Unfortunately, the populations of some of these animals – bats, birds, bees and other insects – are declining because of many factors. Increased use of pesticides and the replacement of natural habitats by roadways, homes and non-native plant species are some ways that these creatures are being threatened. One way to help pollinators at home is to create your own pollinator habitat. Pollinators need food sources throughout the year. Grow clusters of plants that will flower at different stages of the growing season to supply a steady food source. Vary the type of plant to encourage different kinds of pollinators to visit. Enjoy your flowers, fruits and vegetables, and help provide habitat for pollinators at the same time.

Viewer Tip: Native is best. Pollinators thrive on plants that would naturally occur in the region. Search out plant species native to your area to encourage pollinators to make your garden their new home.

How many gallons of water can you save in a day? Saving water at home can be as easy as turning the water off while brushing your teeth, which saves up to eight gallons of water per day – and almost 3,000 gallons for the whole year. That’s enough water to run an Energy Star dishwasher 750 times!

Viewer Tip: Saving water is especially important during a drought. The 40 Gallon Challenge tracks individual water savings county-by-county across the United States. Using the 40 Gallon Challenge’s interactive map, you can see how much water counties and states are saving and what water-saving techniques are most popular. Visit www.40gallonchallenge.org to pledge to save water at home and compete against other counties to help your state save the most water in the country!

Why 40 gallons? Saving a minimum of 40 gallons a day for 30 days adds up to more than 1,000 gallons per month. Most water providers bill in thousand-gallon increments, so you should see real savings on your water bill if you put to use the recommended water-saving practices.

Did you know that many of the insects in your garden are more beneficial than harmful? When gardeners see insects or insect damage on their plants, many reach for pesticides in an effort to eliminate harmful pests. Unfortunately, pesticides can kill valuable garden insects – like ladybugs, assassin bugs and praying mantis – and may also harm birds, bats, spiders, and lizards. Pesticides are also considered a contributor to the population decline of the honey bee. All of the beneficial insects work to control the pest population and pollinate the area plants.

Viewer Tip: Small populations of pests are necessary to provide a constant food source for good insects. Take a few days to evaluate the insects in your garden and decide if pesticides are necessary or if the beneficial insect population can maintain a healthy balance. If you must use a pesticide in your yard, make sure to choose a product that is intended for the pest you wish to eliminate. Always wait for dry weather to apply yard-care chemicals.

The U.S Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and NOAA’s National Weather Service are encouraging Americans to “Be Air Aware” this week as part of Air Quality Awareness Week. Concentrations of air pollution tend to increase on the tail end of high pressure systems, after the center of the high passes by. High pressure systems affect a number of weather conditions, which can lead to poor air quality.

Higher temperatures promote chemical reactions, such as the formation of ground-level ozone and particle pollution.

Winds become lighter when pressure builds. Light or no wind allows air pollutants to build up. Still conditions also provide a better environment for chemical reactions to occur.

Dry air does not move as much as moist air, allowing pollutants to build up. Days with high ozone pollution levels often occur when humidity is low. However, on humid days, poor visibility occurs when small particles in the air absorb moisture and swell, reducing visibility.

Sinking air in high pressure systems prevents the air from cooling and forming clouds. This creates sunny days – a key ingredient in the formation of ozone is sunlight.

Inversions, when cooler air is trapped near the ground by a layer of warmer air above, can trap pollution near the Earth’s surface. This can lead to high levels of ozone and particle pollution.

Viewer Tip: People with heart and lung diseases or asthma, children and older adults can be especially at-risk for health problems related to air pollution, and extremely poor air quality can affect everyone. Stay healthy and reduce your exposure by watching air quality reports from your local media or checking www.airnow.gov. When conditions reach “Code Orange” or higher, consider rescheduling sports games and other strenuous outdoor activities for another day. If you do go outside, aim for early morning or evening hours, when air pollution levels are likely to be lower.

When thinking of the sights and sounds of springtime, do you think warbler? Spotting a warbler is a sure sign that spring is here. During the spring these beautiful birds migrate to North America from South and Central America. These spirited creatures are a treat for any birdwatcher. Noticing their cheerful calls can lead you to a discovery of intense yellows and hints of orange to distinguishing suits of black and white. The Yellow Warbler, Common Yellowthroat, Black and White Warbler, Magnolia Warbler, Black-throated Green Warbler and Yellow-rumped Warbler are just a few of the more common warblers that can be spotted this time of year. This bird is an added gem to any birdwatcher’s list.

Viewer Tip: Warblers are small and quick. If your bird watching goal is to observe warblers, research their unique sounds. They feed on insects in and around trees, and noticing their sounds can often lead you to the perfect spot.

National Public Health Week takes place from April 4-10, 2011. This year’s theme is “Safety is NO Accident: Live Injury Free.” Safety from weather events is central to keeping people well. A 2009 NOAA study found that floods, extreme heat and rip currents are leading causes of weather-related fatalities. Common causes of weather-related injuries are tornadoes, extreme heat and winter storms. With winter weather largely behind us, most of the weather-related risks to life and safety are coming up in spring and summer.

Viewer Tip: This is good time to remember some basic weather safety tips that will keep you and your family safe.

Heat: Even when the outside temperature is relatively mild (about 70 degrees) the temperature inside a sealed car can rise quickly – up to 40 degrees in 60 minutes. Please don’t leave kids or pets alone in a car, even for a few minutes.

Floods: As winter snow melts and rain falls, floods will occur in some parts of the country. Remember the National Weather Service’s advice to “Turn Around, Don’t Drown.” Never cross flooded roads or pathways in a car or on foot – find another, safe route.

Lightning: If you can hear thunder, lightning is close enough to strike. The only safe place when lightning is nearby is inside a substantial building or a metal-topped vehicle.

This information is provided by the American Meteorological Society, a partner in National Public Health Week.

Spring is the perfect time of year to give your home cooling equipment a check-up. Fixing any problems now will help you avoid air-conditioning problems when hot weather arrives. And, well-maintained air conditioning systems cool more efficiently, saving energy and money.

Viewer Tip: You can perform a cooling system check-up yourself or ask a professional for help. According to EPA’s Energy Star program, a typical check-up should include:

Tightening electrical connections. Faulty connections can be unsafe and reduce the life of your system.

Lubricating moving parts to reduce friction in motors and increase energy efficiency.

Checking the condensate drain. A plugged drain can affect indoor humidity levels and cause water damage in your home.

Checking system controls for safe operation. Make sure your system starts, stops and operates as it should.

Cleaning air conditioning coils for increased energy efficiency and to prolong the life of the equipment.

Checking refrigerant level and adjusting if necessary. Too much or too little refrigerant can affect system efficiency.

Cleaning and adjusting blower components for good airflow. Problems with airflow can reduce an air conditioning system’s efficiency by up to 15 percent!

March 14 through 20 is the third annual Fix a Leak Week, sponsored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Leaks can account for more than 10,000 gallons of water wasted in the average home every year—enough to fill a backyard swimming pool. But stopping leaks is as easy as “check, twist, replace.”

Check for leaks. Look for dripping faucets, showerheads and fixture connections. Find silent toilet leaks by putting a few drops of food coloring into the tank, waiting 10 minutes and seeing if color appears in the bowl before you flush. Don’t forget to check irrigation systems and spigots outdoors.

Twist and tighten pipe connections. To save more water in the bathroom without a noticeable difference in flow, twist on a WaterSense labeled faucet aerator.

Replace fixtures if necessary. Look for WaterSense labeled models, which are independently certified to use 20 percent less water and perform as well or better than standard models.

March 14-18 is the National Weather Service’s Flood Safety Awareness Week. Flooding occurs from coast to coast at all times of the year – and there are many factors that contribute to flooding events.

Snowmelt Flooding: When snow begins to melt, flooding can occur if the amount of snowmelt exceeds the capacity for soils and surface waters to store water. The Northeast, North Central and Western U.S. are particularly vulnerable to snowpack flooding.

Ice Jams: In northern parts of the U.S., ice covers many lakes and rivers during the winter. Sometimes, as ice breaks up and flows downstream, it can pile up at obstructed areas (such as narrow parts of the river or bridges) and cause upstream flooding.

Tropical Cyclone Inland Flooding: Heavy rainfall associated with hurricanes, typhoons, and tropical storms often causes more damage than high winds. Slow-moving storms can mean that heavy rains persist over one area, increasing the risk for flooding.

Flash Floods: Flash flooding usually happens when heavy, localized rainfall causes water to rise rapidly in a low-lying area or stream. Flash floods can happen quickly and without warning, and are often the result of slowly moving thunderstorms or multiple storms occurring in a short amount of time.

Debris Flows: After a wildfire, debris flows (mud flows) can be a serious risk. When rain falls on burned slopes, water can pick up speed quickly, carrying soils and rocks along the way. Debris flows can damage bridges, roadways, culverts, and buildings, and can cause injuries and death.

Viewer Tip: Every family should be prepared for a flood. Develop a family disaster plan – learn what your flood risk is, find out how your community will warn you if a natural disaster occurs, and identify evacuation plans. For a checklist of tips to help homeowners avoid flood damage, see Avoiding Flood Damage: A checklist for Homeowners at www.nhc.noaa.gov/HAW2/pdf/flood_damage.pdf.

Currently, nearly 95 percent of the southeastern United States is experiencing abnormally dry or drought conditions. The spring months – March through May – are a time of increased wildfire risk in this part of the country. Wildfire risk can be especially high in areas where homes and buildings are located adjacent to woodlands, parks and other natural landscapes.

Viewer Tip: This is a good time of year to survey your property and reduce the amount of flammable material around your home. An easy way to do this is to think of your property in zones:

Zone 1 is closest to your home and extends for at least 30 feet. This zone should be well-irrigated and planted with native plants that are well-suited to the local climate.

Zone 2 extends at least 20 feet from Zone 1. This area should also be well-irrigated and can include low-growing plants, shrubs and carefully-placed trees. Place trees at least 10 feet apart and trim away dead branches.

Zone 3 is the furthest from your home and extends at least 50 feet from Zone 2. Think of this as a “slightly modified natural area.” Thin out dense areas of trees and remove dead or dying trees and shrubs.

Season: Spring

The 2011 Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) takes place from February 18-21. Each year, bird watchers across the country tally the birds they see in backyards, parks and natural areas. Last year, GBBC participants racked up more than 10 million observations! Counting birds during GBBC helps scientists gain a “snapshot” of North America’s winter bird population and investigate important questions, including:

Have this winter’s snow and cold temperatures influenced bird populations?

Are there differences in bird diversity in cities, suburban, rural and natural areas?

Are there any bird populations that are declining?

GBBC counts have also helped scientists record the spread of Eurasian Collared Doves, understand the impact of West Nile virus on crows, and capture the paths of Sandhill Crane migrations.

Viewer Tip: Anyone can participate in GBBC by tallying birds for at least 15 minutes on any day of the count. Simple instructions for counting and reporting birds are available at www.birdsource.org/gbbc/howto.html. You can also find regional bird checklists, photo galleries, resources for kids and more!

GBBC is a joint project of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, Audubon and Bird Studies Canada.
